FireCraft Pellet-Q450 Expert Review

When it comes to pellet grills, it’s easy to find a grill that has some of what you want, but it’s a lot harder finding one that has everything you want. For instance, until recently, if I wanted a stainless steel pellet grill with premium features for under $1000, I would have been out of luck. Thankfully, the FireCraft Pellet-Q450 has filled that void.

Reasons to Buy

Whether it’s the way they shimmer in the sun or their durability, there’s a lot to like about stainless steel grills. As a griller who has to endure cold winters and wet springs, I prefer stainless steel first and foremost because it’s rust resistant, but also because of its sleek appearance. For many years, pellet grills looked like steel offset smokers. Even now, despite the popularity of stainless steel gas grills, most pellet grills are powder coated steel. As one of only a few stainless steel pellet grills on the market, the Pellet-Q450 is an outlier that stands out from the crowd. It combines attractive styling with durable construction meant to last a lifetime.

Regardless of how good they look or how long they’ll last, pellet grills are ultimately judged on performance. If I’m going to invest money in a grill that promises versatility and set-it-and-forget-it ease, I better be able to cook great food with zero effort. The Pellet-Q450 delivers on both fronts. The one-touch AccuTemp Digital Controller maintains its temperature within a few degrees and can be used in conjunction with the included programmable meat probe to lower the temperature when food is done. So even if I’m kicking back with friends and lose track of time, it’s nearly impossible to overcook the food. The Pellet-Q450 also features expanded versatility, with a direct grilling option that adds high heat searing to the usual smoking, grilling, roasting, and baking offered by most pellet grills.

For my money, the FireCraft Pellet-Q450’s best feature isn’t its stainless steel finish or its capabilities. It’s the price. While there are other stainless steel pellet grills with PID temperature control and premium features, they generally start at $1600 and can cost several times more than that. The FireCraft Pellet-Q450, on the other hand, is a relative bargain at just $999.

Reasons to Keep Shopping

At 450 square inches, the FireCraft Pellet-Q450 is ideal for a medium-sized family. However, it lacks a secondary cooking rack. If you want a stainless steel pellet grill with a bit more space, I’d suggest the Fast Eddy’s PG500, which offers 730 square inches with the included secondary cooking rack and features a dedicated direct grilling area, no accessories needed. If stainless steel is less of a priority than price, you might consider the Louisiana Grills LG 900. The big LG 900 trades grilling space for lower quality materials; it’s the same price and is larger than the Pellet-Q450 but doesn’t offer stainless steel construction.
